A prototype of the Voith Gravita®, a new, futuristically designed diesel locomotive, was first launched at the Innotrans 2008. The German railway company Deutsche Bahn AG decided to order 130 Gravita® 10BBs for heavy shunting, and delivery is scheduled to begin in 2010. BRAWA has already started preparing models in HO and N gauges. Our developers have made a detailed study of the newcomer, and we will be keeping a close eye on the further development of the DB serial locomotive.

As soon as the final version of the new locomotive is available, we will be reproducing it in true-to-original detail, and with meticulous care and precision. The version pictured below is the prototype: the BRAWA models, on the other hand, will be in traffic red and copied exactly from the DB serial locomotive.

Look out for the great new Voith Gravita® 10BB from BRAWA – after all, when it comes to dedication to detail, you can’t beat our track record!

The rising star in the shunting sector

It was back in the 1990s that Voith first developed a powerful hydraulic drive, to be used in a new generation of diesel line locomotives by Mak Vossloh. The anticipated contract from Deutsche Bahn AG never came, however, due to the oversupply of traction units for the 232 series. Rather than let the invention go to waste, Voith decided to try its hand at developing a locomotive of its own. This led to the birth in 2006 of the Maxima® 40 CC - the most powerful single-engine diesel-hydraulic locomotive in the world. It is equipped with a 3600 kW engine from the Anglo-Belgian Corporation, allowing a starting tractive effort up to 519 kN. Two less powerful variants constructed on the same basis, the Maxima® 30 CC and the Maxima® 20 BB, are also available.

The great success and the high availability and reliability of Voith’s invention encouraged the company to devise a modular family of locomotives for light line and shunting service. A high demand is anti cipated in this segment over the next few years, as a large number of older locomotives become due for replacement. Tenders for 130 loco motives for line light and shunting service were already invited by DB AG in 2007. The Gravita® family was first launched by Voith at the Innotrans 2008. Five different variants of the powerful four-axle Gravita® 20BB are planned, down to the “baby” which goes by the name of Gravita® 5BB and has only two axles. Despite Vossloh’s offer of a G 1000, a loco motive long favoured by many railway companies, DB AG’s choice alighted on Voith and the Gravita® 10BB, even though it only existed on paper at the time. In 2008, Voith built three test vehicles for the 1200 kW locomotives designed respectively for Germany/France, Germany/Netherlands and Germany only, in order to hasten their approval by the relevant railway authorities. With their elegant, futuristic design and attractive black or two-tone blue livery, these vehicles caused a stir within the industry. Key advantages highlighted by Voith are the modular operating concept – with most features identical to the Maxima® - and the multiple traction capability which ensures compatibility with all vehicles of the Voith range.

The serial locomotives are scheduled to be delivered to DB AG over the period 2010 to 2013, and will be assigned the series number 260. Firm orders for further locomotives have meanwhile also been placed by other railway companies.

The model will be equipped with further details which were not fixed at the time of going to print. We will publish the delivery date and further information on details as soon as the original DB AG version is completed.
