At the turn of the 20th century, the K.W.St.E. purchased luggage cars with elevated guard’s compartments. From there, the guard had a much better view of the train and the track. Even at the K.W.St.E., many older luggage cars were retrofitted with these elevated guard’s compartments. As a result of the modifications, they were able to remain in service for many more years.
