In the joint numbering system of the DR and the DB in 1992, there were still 302 locomotives of the series E 42 with the new serial number 142. There were also a number of locomotives of the former 211 series which had been grouped under 242 with reduced maximum speed.


In spite of the decline in rail transport following German Reunification and the consequent reduced requirements for locomotives of the 142 series, several of them were painted in the new bright red of the DB with the so-called “bib“. Locomotive 142 124-7 from the Magdeburg depot is one of these.
