Since 1869, Bad Friedrichshall-Jagstfeld had been connected by rail to the outside world. When the “Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG” in the salt mine of Kochendorf began mining in 1899, freight traffic increased considerably. For transport, the Württembergische Staatseisenbahnen put open cars with folding flaps into service to protect the moisture-sensitive freight. As special cars they were assigned to a permanent home station and were not allowed to be used to transport freight which could contaminate the hold. In 1994, salt mining ended in Württemberg and the shafts will probably be filled in by 2015.
