Latrine Car DRG

Up until the late 1920s, even many large towns did not have a sewage system. However, the waste water of the towns was very much sought after in rural areas for use as fertiliser. Therefore, several state railways put cars into service which were referred to as latrine, manure, fertiliser or sewage cars. They were used to transport the „fragrant“ freight – delivered by horse and cart – to the recipients for use on the so-called manure fields. After most large towns were connected to a sewage system, most of the cars were no longer needed and those remaining were -frequently used to transport sewage from small rural stations.
