Albert Traugott Zeller established an oil refinery in Eislingen an der Fils in 1867. The company evolved into the largest of its kind in the Kingdom of Württemberg in the following years. It had a large fleet of its own tank cars to transport the raw and finished products directly along the Stuttgart to Ulm railway line. In 1911, Zeller und Gmelin had 21 tank cars in operation, which was more than any other company in Württemberg.
