From 1938 the DR began to reinforce its covered cars of Class A2. The aim of this was to be more able to bear the higher loads due to the installation of the compressed air brake. With covered cars, this occasion was also often used to shorten the brakeman’s cab to the edge of the roof, as there were frequently leaks at this point. However, due to the large numbers, numerous cars with a large brakeman’s cab also survived the Second World War and were allocated to the stock of the newly founded BBÖ.
