Many iron express train cars remained inside the Soviet occupation zone. The DR was initially unable to cope without these vehicles and they were originally included in high-class passenger trains before they were gradually relegated to less susperior trains when carriages with new designs were put into service. However, they did not disappear from the rails until the DR introduced its reconstruction programme and, even then, their bogies, buffer plates and other parts were used for many years to come in the remodelled vehicles.
