To transport prisoners, the Deutsche Reichsbahn used cell cars in the GDR, which were in service as part of normal passenger trains. The cars from the 1920s were fitted with cells for the prisoners as well as a compartment for the guard personnel and a toilet. The construction of the cars was designed in such a way as to offer as few possibilities of escape as possible. Therefore the cell cars had barred windows, no intercommunication gangway and access doors only at the handbrake end.
