Up to 1965, a total of 83 locomotives of the four-axle version of the V180 were built by LKM in Babelsberg. The name V180 showed the output of the locomotives, which resulted from being equipped with two 900 HP engines. This fully met the requirements in passenger and freight train transport, although due to the maximum speed of 120 kph it also had the honour of being used for high quality express trains. For a long time, the attractive locomotives were a characteristic hallmark of the non-electrified rail network of the Deutsche Reichsbahn.
