Info about the original

From the beginning of the rail era until today, the regulations specify that the end of a train needs to be identified with appropriate end signals. No train may drive without end signals. Until 1935, the day signal comprised two square red-white boards, the so-called upper car disks, and a round end disk on the buffer plank. At night, the disks needed to be replaced with red lanterns. Due to the fact that freight trains on the regional rail networks were almost always driven during the day, most of them had the disks without lighting.
